Dimension: 5
Gene Splicing was a title developed by a small studio, and it offered a quite outdated experience for 1999. These type of RPG, dungeon-crawler, adventure games were everywhere by the early 90s, and Gene Splicing seems as if it straggled itself out of that trend. Nonetheless, creating these kind of games always comes with its challenges, so it's not a small-scale game by any means.
The Flair: 5
The technical aspect is the one that most suffers how obsolete the game is. With paint-like graphics, almost non existing sound and a very archaic user interface and menus, it's hard to find good things to salvage concerning this section.
The Feel: 7
As a rule of thumb, RPGs and dungeon crawlers' gameplay have a lot going on behind the curtain. This is also true for Gene Splicing, but in this case it's extremely unclear what attributes mean. For instance, after playing for a while, I still have doubts about what's the effect in the game of having a character with high intelligence, agility, or even strength - which is usually pretty straightforward. Onto other matters, although on the surface they may seem decently implemented, both fighting and exploring are confusing and chaotic.
The Fuel: 8
In terms of content, we find what is perhaps the only barely salvageable asset of the game. Although the story is as confusing as the gameplay and the enemy variety seems void, as there are almost no different types of attacks, truth is there is variety. Quite a few weapons, different enemies and stages to explore... the quality may not be there, but it definitely doesn't feel scarce in that sense.

Conclusions
Gene Splicing is an outdated title that presents too many barriers and not enough gratification when overcoming them. Its tedious interface and confusing mechanics don't make it easy at all and there are no hooks or motivations that counter these difficulties. Still, it may be a reasonably enjoyable title for the most patient players that are willing to do their bit.
